Lyon’s most beautiful luxury hotels

From the heights of the city to the historic center, via the Quai Jules Courmont, our editorial team takes you on a tour of Lyon’s finest luxury hotels.

If the capital of Gaul is renowned for its lights as well as its fine cuisine, it’s also full of hotels that are well worth a visit. Here’s a tour of Lyon’s finest luxury hotels where you can spend a weekend… and more, if you like.

1. Villa Maïa | Lyon's luxury and design address

Owned by the eponymous group, Villa Maïa boasts one of the most breathtaking views in Lyon. Perched on the Antiquaille site, near the remains of the ancient Roman theaters, this concrete and glass villa designed by Jean-Michel Wilmotte and decorated by Jacques Grange boasts a resolutely modern allure. Its 37 rooms boast a hushed atmosphere, with soft tones, varnished furniture, Japanese straw wall hangings and walls adorned with anamorphoses created exclusively by artist Charles Maze.

Paying homage to the site's heritage, the spa reinterprets the ancient Roman baths, offering visitors the chance to indulge in a few laps while enjoying the view of the cloister and garden, designed by Louis Benech. You'll also love lazing about in the jacuzzi, hammam and sauna, or enjoying a tailor-made facial with Biologique Recherche, the emblematic French cosmetics brand that adapts to each skin type following a diagnosis, specializing in highly dosed formulas of natural active ingredients. As for massage, the classics are all there, from hot stone massage to Californian, lomi lomi, energizing abhyanga or Swedish sports massage.

Last but not least, no traveler can leave the city without having dined at least once at the Christian Têtedoie restaurant, just opposite the Villa, where the chef brilliantly reinterprets the great classics of his mentor Paul Bocuse, always with a view over Lyon. On the menu this lunchtime: smoked eel from the Dombes region, beet and yarrow; pike-perch, chanterelle grise, butternut and red wine sauce; or sweetbreads with Voatsiperifery pepper (Madagascar), anchovy and puntarelle.

Not far from Place Bellecour, within easy walking distance of Perrache station, this 19th-century townhouse has been given a new lease on life by Isabelle and Gilles Moynier. This passionate couple have transformed it into a traveler's home, adorned with antiques and souvenirs brought back from their sojourns abroad. The eclectic lobby-grand salon combines bookcases and a collection of mugs, chechias and teapots, old trunks, lithographs, stacks of books, writings by Le Corbusier, sketches by Picasso... Periods and graphics interact under a Neapolitan chandelier with tassels. Art is also on display in the 1930s-inspired bedrooms. 5. InterContinental Lyon Hôtel-Dieu | The grand hotel of Lyon

Following in the footsteps of its flagship in Marseille, the InterContinental group has chosen the former Hôtel-Dieu as the setting for its Lyon jewel. The decor, also designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel, emphasizes "humble luxury", enriched by nods to Lyon's heritage, with silks and motifs inspired by the canuts of the time. Facing the Rhône, the inner courtyards or the building's historic gardens, the 144 rooms perpetuate this spirit, and are adorned with silk ornaments, mosaics, gold or powdered tones that contrast with the mineral aspect of the place. In the late afternoon, travelers are invited to enjoy a cocktail under the building's impressive 32-metre-high dome. The rest of the experience takes place at l'Epona, the establishment's restaurant, adjacent to the cloister that was once the Hôtel-Dieu's medicinal garden. You won't want to miss Chef Mathieu Charrois' "k'nelle", or his famous "cocottes à partager" (" like at home ").

Period furniture rubs shoulders with the latest in design, while the 62 rooms and 10 suites are decorated entirely in red or blue Jouy fabrics. The Institut, the Institut Paul Bocuse's training restaurant, is led by chef Cyril Bosviel. Here, you'll enjoy Bocuse-quality cuisine, such as pâté en croûte with quince and mushroom tartar, pork belly and black pudding with cockles and razor clams in parsley, and Rossini-style beef chuck, slow-cooked like a Bourguignon.

10. Pilo Hotel

The hotel of Lyon? Designed by architectural duo Yann Martin and Benjamin Clarens of the CUT studio, this hybrid-style establishment occupies a former elementary school nestled on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse, Lyon's trendiest district. Driven by the ambition to reinvent the so-called traditional hotel model, Pilo - from the English Pillow- is at the crossroads of youth hostel and hotel, combining capsule beds, a locavore bistro, family rooms and communal spaces designed for community living. Behind its stone facade, listed as a historic monument, Pilo's entrance opens onto a jungle-inspired décor featuring hanging plants and stainless steel panels reflecting the tree-lined courtyard. Central posts, remnants of the former gymnasium structure, punctuate the 160-cover dining area, the hotel's cathedral-like centerpiece. On the mezzanine floor, with its more subdued ambience, alcoves have been converted into office areas to ensure tranquillity and a high quality of work.

What about the rooms? The hospitality concept offers 200 beds in different categories, ranging from standard or premium double rooms, to family rooms with a mezzanine dedicated to children with 5-metre high ceilings, to dormitories equipped with specially designed capsule beds to provide an intimate bubble for a good night's sleep. In all, the shell of the building boasts 45 rooms, the majority of which boast a breathtaking view of the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica and a series of palisade-style galvanized steel benches and armchairs designed by the famous Bouroullec brothers.
