Luberon’s finest spa hotels for a relaxing retreat

In the heart of Provence’s rolling hills of vineyards and olive groves, these spa hotels in the Luberon region are ideal destinations for those looking to recharge their batteries in the peace and quiet of a dream setting.

1. Coquillade Provence, a haven of peace in southern Vaucluse

Nestled in Gargas, in an ancient hamlet built in the 11th-century by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Sénanque, the Relais & Châteaux Coquillade Provence is one of the finest spa hotels in the Luberon. Set in over 40 hectares of vineyards, forests, olive groves and fragrant lavender fields, it reproduces the gentle atmosphere of a charming Provencal village. With its exceptional rooms - and some suites with private Jacuzzis - this top-of-the-range resort, which can even privatize the estate for various occasions and ceremonies, reveals the magic of Provence in a whole new light.

Spa? To pamper yourself, this hotel in the Luberon opens the doors of its titanic 2,000m2 spa. With a dreamy landscape as a backdrop, the relaxation list is long, with an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, hammam, steam bath, ice fountain, outdoor Jacuzzis and private garden... enough to offer a moment of pure tranquillity away from the pace of city life. The hotel is also renowned for encouraging cycling on the region's roads, paths and cycle tracks, thanks to the advice of expert coaches and a collection of 120 top-of-the-range bikes from Swiss brand BMC.

On the menu, the Avelan gourmet restaurant explores the finest local produce in a succession of seasonal dishes. On the sweet side, Aurélien Trousse, pastry chef and medal winner at the Championnat de France du Dessert, is at the helm. He focuses on French pastry classics, awakened by a masterful Provencal touch. Close to the Luberon Regional Nature Park and the famous Mont Ventoux, the hotel, which offers tailor-made excursions, is ideally located for exploring the surrounding area. The possibilities are endless, from discovering wine estates to a retro tour in a legendary Caterham car, or a cultural visit to Avignon.

2. Airelles Gordes, La Bastide, a rock-side refuge

Overlooking the heights of Gordes, one of France's most beautiful villages, this former seigniorial residence, built on 18th-century ramparts, retains all its Provencal soul. In an idyllic natural setting surrounded by fragrant cypress hanging gardens, La Bastide is a peaceful refuge with 40 rooms and suites, as well as a private villa (La Maison de Constance). Each key, decorated with a selection of woodwork, fabrics, antique furniture and objets d'art, tells its own story. With its 5 restaurants, it's hard to choose between southern, Asian or Italian cuisine. La table de la Bastide, headed by Chef Pierre Marty, subtly reinvents Provencal cuisine and offers a splendid panoramic view of the Luberon massif. On the terrace, the 5-star hotel's bluish pool offers a sumptuous view of the verdant landscape.

3. Capelongue, a bucolic escape in the heart of the Luberon region

Perched high above the village of Bonnieux, Capelongue is laid out like a small Provencal hamlet, with its stone bastides, central square adorned with a fountain and lavender fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Taken over by the Beaumier group and entirely redesigned in keeping with local architecture, the Luberon spa hotel combines rural charm and 5-star comfort in the spirit of a vacation home. The 57 rooms and suites - scattered in rustic buildings and decorated in warm tones with natural materials such as wood, stone and terracotta - open onto gardens scented with lavender and rosemary, or onto the village rooftops. Two restaurants punctuate life on the estate: La Bastide, a Michelin-starred restaurant where chef Noël Bérard highlights local produce, and La Bergerie, a more relaxed address featuring wood-fired cuisine by chef Mathieu Guivarch. A swimming corridor, reading corners, a café, a library and numerous paths complete this ideal address for an immersion in Provence.

The spa? The Capelongue spa is well worth a visit. The 300 m² wellness area is housed in an old dry-stone building that plays on Provencal authenticity: terracotta floors, natural plaster walls, rough-hewn wooden furniture and red accents inspired by the local earth. The wellness area features a Roman bath, a cold recovery bath, a hammam and three treatment cabins, including one designed for duo massages. All treatments are by Biologique Recherche. A relaxation room invites you to prolong the experience with a homemade infusion, while a fitness room keeps the more motivated on their toes.

4. Domaine de Fontenille, the art of Provencal living

Like a family home, the Domaine de Fontenille is the very first hotel in the upscale Les Domaines de Fontenille collection (70 hectares... & l'Océan, Domaine de Primard, Domaine de Chalamon...). Bordered by century-old cedars, woods, vineyards and springs, this 18th-century noble house is a dream stopover where the Provencal art of living reigns supreme. The place, which favors proximity to its guests, offers a small flight of 21 luminous rooms and suites, some with a confidential terrace. Chef Guillaume Goupil is in charge of the kitchen. At the restaurant La Cuisine d'Amélie, he gives pride of place to authentic regional dishes, with fruit and vegetables grown directly in the estate's permaculture vegetable garden.

5. La Bastide de Marie, an intimate property with chic, rustic charm

Nestled between Ménerbes and Bonnieux, La Bastide de Marie is a restored 18th-century stone farmhouse set in 26 hectares of vineyards. The main living space, housed in the old barn, offers lounges and a library upstairs, for a break from reading or board games. Decorated in perfect harmony with the spirit of the place, the rooms, suites and villas are all arranged with a fine choice of furniture sourced from local second-hand and antique dealers. The bathroom basins are by Philippe Starck, a much-appreciated design reference. Closely attuned to nature and the seasons, the chef at La Bastide de Marie creates a fragrant menu whose watchword is simplicity. For lovers of wine and wine-making, it's possible to take part in the life of the vineyard and taste the vintages in the Domaine de Marie cellars during your stay. A true hotel amidst the vines.

The spa? With a thousand and one accents of the South, the Pure Altitude spa at La Bastide de Marie has focused on designing signature treatments using active ingredients from local plants, revealing all the benefits of Provence: honey and jasmine wraps, a massage using linen pouches saturated with salts and essential oils of lavender and pine... Its two beautiful turquoise pools, one of which is deliciously heated, are inspired by the charm of the fish ponds once found on the premises.
