Château Léognan on the Gironde Wine Route

About 20 minutes from Bordeaux, Château Léognan offers a setting of vineyards, forests, and parks—perfect for unwinding. Philippe and Chantal Miecaze, who entered the wine industry out of passion rather than family tradition, have created a 5-star estate here that is still evolving. It already charms guests with its authenticity, its hospitality, and its vineyard, which is an integral part of the experience.

Getting There

Located about 20 kilometers from Bordeaux, Château Léognan is about a 20- to 30-minute drive from downtown. The location is particularly convenient for a stopover on the Bordeaux, Graves, and Sauternes wine route, without straying too far from Bordeaux. Once you pass through the gate, however, the scenery changes completely: vineyards, woods, and grounds make you feel as though you’re in the middle of the countryside. The estate offers free parking with electric charging stations.

A home still in the making, but already deeply endearing

Our review at a glance

Château Léognan is one of the best hotels in Gironde. The estate is beautiful, and its potential is clear, even if significant work still needs to be done to ensure the experience fully lives up to the place’s ambitions. But its charm is already evident: in the very personal story of Philippe and Chantal Miecaze, a couple who came to the wine business out of passion rather than family heritage. An adventure that gives the château a special authenticity, evident in the warm welcome, the attention to detail, and, above all, the heart they put into their work. A place still in the making, but already deeply endearing.

The hotel’s spirit?

Nestled in the heart of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, this 19th-century estate exudes the atmosphere of a Bordeaux château—more warm and welcoming than solemn. Philippe and Chantal Miecaze acquired the estate in 2007 and undertook the renovation of the main building and its chapel. The hotel project has since expanded to encompass the six-hectare vineyard, transforming it into one of the most beautiful hotels nestled among the vines—an integral part of the experience today. Molding, chandeliers, draperies, panoramic wallpaper, and distinctive furnishings come together to create the decor of a chic family home, without ostentation. Since 2023, a new chapter has begun in partnership with BMF Hospitality. The estate continues its transformation, and it is precisely this blend of well-established heritage and an ongoing project that defines Château Léognan today.

What are the rooms like?

The rooms in the castle are truly impressive. The 17 rooms and suites are divided into five categories: Superior (18 m²), Deluxe (20–33 m²), Prestige with Garden (26–38 m²), Deluxe Quadruple (52 m²), and Junior Suites with Terrace (45 m²). The decor preserves the spirit of the estate, featuring soft colors, panoramic wallpaper, moldings, and more contemporary details. All the expected comforts are there, but it’s perhaps the little touches that make the biggest difference. They have a more family-oriented feel than the standard formula of traditional hotels, and that’s exactly what makes them so delightful. The owners’ generosity and passion shine through in the details, as well as in every interaction.

The room to book: a 45 m² Junior Suite with a terrace, located in the castle’s towers. With two bedrooms and a large terrace overlooking the gardens, it’s perfect for both a romantic weekend and a family vacation with children.

Dining: restaurants, bar, and breakfast?

Le Manège has struck just the right balance. Housed in the estate’s former stables, with a terrace for sunny days, the restaurant is now run by Marouane El Ghouasli. Gone are the overly ambitious Michelin-star aspirations: the restaurant embraces the vibe of a good bistro, without unnecessary pretension, where the château’s guests happily mingle with the locals. The chef himself champions a simpler, more straightforward, and authentic cuisine, guided by the ingredients, the season, and the terroir of southwestern France. The bar opens every evening at 6 p.m. The real highlight, however, comes upon waking: the breakfast buffet is sublime, generous, and lives up to what one would expect from a top-tier hotel, with the added pleasure of being served in a room steeped in history.

Spa, pool, beach: What do you need to know?

The spa is a good example of what Château Léognan is like today: the personal touch is already there, but the facilities still need to catch up. The therapists are excellent, and the treatments are one of the real highlights of the stay. The offerings, developed in partnership with the French organic dermocosmetics brand Alaena, include massages as well as facial and body treatments. A sauna, hammam, and Nordic bath round out the experience; special mention goes to the sauna with a view of the forest, which alone justifies a wellness getaway here. The current facility, however, is quite far from the castle, and access to it is still somewhat cumbersome. This issue is set to be resolved, as the spa is scheduled to relocate to improve guests’ comfort. Currently, 1 hour and 30 minutes of access to the wellness area is included per person per stay.

Wine Tourism, at the Heart of the Stay

The six-hectare vineyard, planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, gives the estate its distinctive character. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted in the vineyard and then in the cellar, before vinification and aging in French oak barrels. The château currently offers ten wine tourism experiences: guided or vertical tastings, gourmet tours, wine and dessert pairings, a caviar experience, horse-drawn carriage rides… Both the owners and staff go out of their way to make Léognan a must-visit stop on the wine route. The gift shop is open year-round, and tours are by reservation only.

So, should we make a reservation?

Yes, as long as you come knowing that the story is still unfolding. Château Léognan hasn’t yet completed its transformation, and some facilities still need to be upgraded so the estate can reach its full potential. But that’s also what makes it so charming today. The value for money is excellent, with rooms starting at 160 euros per night—especially for those who prioritize a property’s character, the quality of the hospitality, and the vineyard experience over the perfection of a fully established resort. The passion of Philippe and Chantal Miecaze and the dedication of their teams lend the place a rare warmth. We’re happy to book a stay today, and we’re genuinely curious to see what the next phase will bring. We can’t wait to return in 2027 to see how far the project has come!

Our favorite detail: the lovely chapel, fully restored by the couple, where you can even get married (since it’s still consecrated)

What we’d change: access to the current spa, which is still a bit far away and not very convenient, until it moves to a new location.

We’ll be back for: the sublime breakfast buffet, served in the castle’s historic setting.

A magical spot: the Nordic bath, with a terrace surrounded by nature

A souvenir to take home: a bottle from the estate, to extend the Pessac-Léognan experience at home.
