The best hotels in Alpilles, Provence

A small massif to the north-east of Arles, the Alpilles, punctuated by small typical villages, is the epitome of the Provencal art of living. This region, renowned for its natural beauty, historical heritage and cultural richness, is home to some magnificent accommodations. Here’s a closer look at our 5 favorite Alpilles hotels.

1. Domaine de Chalamon, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

The pitch? On the outskirts of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Domaine de Chalamon is revealed at the end of a long avenue of century-old plane trees that immediately sets the tempo. This XVIᵉ century bastide, set in 15 hectares of land and gardens, belongs to the Fontenille collection imagined by Guillaume Foucher and Frédéric Biousse. The place plays a very Provencal score: light ochre rendered facade, pale green shutters, sun-warmed terracotta tiles. A palette one instinctively associates with the Alpilles and, inevitably, with Van Gogh, fascinated by this frank, vibrant light. Around the house, the landscape is meticulously composed: six gardens follow one another, from French parterres to cypress esplanades, punctuated by lawns, antique pilasters and topiary-cut olive trees, while fine streams cool the atmosphere in the hot hours.

Inside, classic volumes are brightened by a subtle play of colors and textures. The living rooms feature shades of celadon green and faded pink, enlivened by Caravane linen sofas and Pierre Frey curtains, and punctuated by delicate glass globes by Margaux Keller, a designer from Marseille. Rattan chairs in berlingot hues, colored clay pitchers by Paola Paronetto: each detail adds a contemporary touch without ever upsetting the balance. The place imposes a slow rhythm, almost regulated by the course of the sun on the façades and the minerality of the Alpilles mountains in the background.

And the rooms? The 19 rooms and suites, divided between the bastide and the former orangery, play a gentle, soothing role. Vegetal tones - aniseed green, pale blue - rattan furniture, cane headboards and hand-crafted ceramics make up a refined décor, without decorative overload. Each room bears the name of a figure linked to the artistic imagination of the Alpilles, from Van Gogh to Cézanne, a discreet nod to the Provence that has so inspired painters and filmmakers. Volumes remain measured, designed for relaxation, with an omnipresent, often through-illuminating light that accompanies the stay from sunrise to sunset.

What about gastronomy? At the table d'hôtes piano, cooking is focused on plants, herbs from his kitchen garden and the freshness of local produce sourced from organic market gardeners. Colorful and invigorating, his recipes also lend themselves to country picnics in the Alpilles, where tapenade and vegetable tian with thyme take center stage.

Experiences? At Domaine de Chalamon, mornings begin with a carefully prepared breakfast, served in the bastide or on the terrace depending on the season, with a selection of fresh, local produce. The day then stretches out between a heated swimming pool, tennis courts, occasional yoga sessions in the gardens and electric bike rides through the Alpilles countryside. The estate also offers picnic baskets to take away and explore the region, as well as tastings of Provence wines organized on site. Nothing is imposed: each experience follows a simple logic, leaving guests free to compose their stay at the pace they choose.

2. Baumanière - Les Baux-de-Provence

A landmark of Provencal art de vivre, this legendary hotel nestles in the mineral Val d'Enfer, below one of France's most beautiful villages. Working alongside his grandfather Raymond Thuilier since 1969, owner Jean-André Charial has, over the decades, continued to reinvent a place steeped in history and a magnet for the world's elite. To perpetuate the gastronomic tradition and the third Michelin macaron held for three decades by his grandfather, he called on chef Glenn Viel, consecrated since 2020. With a huge permaculture vegetable garden, tomato dryers in the gardens, beehives on the estate and small pigs to eliminate kitchen waste, sustainability at the table is the spearhead of the chef, who uses the Baumanière's own produce and that of local producers in the kitchen for his "1987" menu, which is 100% plant-based.

Among century-old trees, luxuriant flowerbeds and rose gardens, this Relais & Châteaux features five houses, including L'Oustau, the historic farmhouse. Each of the 53 rooms has its own personality, here adorned with antique furniture from Isle-sur-la Sorgue, there with contemporary objects chosen from prestigious designers. This haven of peace offers three swimming pools and a spa immersed in nature, ideal for moments of relaxation. 3. Les Petites Maisons - Hameau des Baux

Just 5 minutes from the listed château, nestled in the heart of a vast 5-hectare olive grove, this 4-star hotel in the Alpilles region takes on the feel of a small Provencal village, with its shady square and murmuring ancient fountain. Surrounding it, a traditional mas (farmhouse) and several typical mazets seem to slumber peacefully under the century-old plane trees. The first address in a collection called Les Petites Maisons, imagined by Guillaume Multrier and Aurélie Blanquart, this singular living space distills an atmosphere that is at once intimate, joyfully refined and deliciously relaxed. The 27 XXL rooms and suites elegantly combine whitewashed walls, exposed wooden beams, natural materials, vintage furniture found in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and pieces signed by contemporary designers. Some open out onto gardens or olive groves, reinforcing the sense of space and freedom that characterizes the entire address.

This hamlet in Les Baux-de-Provence proudly boasts an artistic approach, sowing works of art in its rooms, communal areas and gardens, inviting guests to take a cultural stroll during their stay. It is also an epicurean destination, with two restaurants that are veritable gourmet meeting points. At L'Allegria, chef Julie Chaix sublimates local produce with fresh, inventive and daring bistronomic cuisine. At La Petite Guinguette, she celebrates the Mediterranean spirit in a festive atmosphere, with tapas, mezze, carefully selected playlists and hanging lights, perfect for September and off-season getaways.

What makes the difference? A relaxed approach to luxury.

4. Hôtel de Tourrel, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

In 2015, Ralph Huesgen and Margot Staengle fell in love with this former mansion tucked away in the old village, between cafés and art galleries. The German couple transformed the original building, constructed in 1650 for the Tourrel d'Almeran family. They have preserved the period architecture with its stuccowork, high ceilings and moldings, as well as the monumental staircase in solid sandstone. This 5-star hotel in the Alpilles region, which had 24 rooms when it opened, now offers 9 suites ranging from 30 to 62 m2, featuring furniture and iconic objects by Eileen Gray and Konstantin Grcic. Volumes are deliberately uncluttered, highlighting the stone, high ceilings and natural light.

La Table, the Michelin-starred restaurant, serves refined Mediterranean cuisine inspired by the region's produce: peaches from the Camargue, fish from Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, lamb from Crau... During the summer season, the hotel's rooftop opens its doors: a second table offers a Mediterranean menu, facing the rooftops of Saint-Rémy. An ideal setting for an evening under the stars. As for relaxation, the hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool and terrace, a welcome luxury in the bustling city center.

What makes it different? A rare address in the Alpilles, combining architectural heritage, contemporary design and village life.

5. Le Prieuré de Maussane in Maussane-les-Alpilles

On the edge of the village, the two hotel houses, Santa Anna and San Leon, are the little sisters in the fields of L'Hôtel Particulier d'Arles. Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, this Tuscan-scented residence has lived many lives. Priory, refectory, cloister, chapel, mill, sheepfold and washhouse make up this estate, which evokes both the life of the monks and the area's agricultural past. Renovated by Brigitte Pagès de Oliveira with respect for ancestral know-how, this Alpilles hotel houses 17 rooms and suites, sublimated by the sobriety of the stone and the purity of the volumes. Monastic in inspiration, clad in pale grey waxed concrete, sometimes with painted ceilings, they feature worm-eaten chests and consoles and a few cult objects (candelabras, gilded wreaths, glass bells).

Uncluttered spaces, but 5-star comfort and service. In the former orange grove, opening onto the garden, the spa invites you to savor moments of relaxation: balneotherapy, hammam, indoor pool and relaxing massages to let go. A time to yourself that can be extended in the shade of the cypress trees by the stone pool. A customer-only restaurant completes this thebaid for those who like to disconnect.

What makes the difference? A confidential, almost introspective address, designed for disconnection.

6. Domaine de Valmouriane, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence

At the foot of the jagged crests of the Alpilles, in a 7-hectare park, this new bastide, which respects Provencal architectural codes, exudes the spirit of a family home. The common areas offer a bold harmony between contemporary, uncluttered decor and colorful pop art. The 25 brightly-lit rooms, some with private terraces or gardens, are soberly elegant. In these soothing surroundings, soft tones and natural materials are spiced up with touches of coral or royal blue.

A little off the beaten track, a large 20 m long mirror pool and pool bar with light refreshments are ideal for a lazy day. For gourmets, the chef at the Baux-Arts restaurant prepares market cuisine in the colors of Provence. A colorful palette of flavors that changes with the seasons.

What makes the difference? A hotel on a human scale, easily accessible from Saint-Rémy, combining natural surroundings, contemporary comfort and a relaxed atmosphere.
