What are the best restaurants in Mauritius?
Local produce, a pinch of India, a hint of Africa, a dose of China and splashes of Europe: Mauritian gastronomy enjoys a multitude of influences, resulting in tasty, ultra-parfumed Creole dishes. These Mauritian restaurants are a must for your next tropical getaway.

1. Le Château, Domaine de Bel Ombre
Listed as a Historic Monument in Mauritius, this sublime 19th-century plantation-style house was built by Mr. Hajee Jackaria Ahmed in 1810, overlooking a garden and kitchen garden arranged around a fountain. Its architect is the same as that of the Bâtiment du Trésor in Port-Louis, which today houses the offices of the Prime Minister of Mauritius. Züber's wallpapers recall the owner's Anglo-Indian origins, the ornamentation echoes the colonial era and the wood-panelled walls lend an authentic ambience. A journey back in time accentuated by antique furniture and Chinese tableware, which welcomes, on the other side of the room, a "farm to plate" kitchen.

Thanks to the sun-drenched, eco-responsible produce grown on the estate, as well as the small local producers who deliver the best of their work, escape is guaranteed at this restaurant in Mauritius, which belongs to the Bel Ombre hotel complex (where the 2 5-star hotels in Mauritius, Heritage Le Telfair and Heritage Awali, are located side by side). Enjoy a declination of palm heart, margozes and turmeric espuma, followed by a duo of Patagonian toothfish fillet and lobster with citrus butter and sweet potato and ginger mousseline; crab tartar with combava; or blue lobster stew, before finishing with banana and chocolate mousse, sweet potato cookie and honey ice cream. A unique culinary interlude rooted in Mauritian cuisine and enhanced by a deep respect for tradition. Not to mention the Château de Bel Ombre's superb cellar and its 300 references. Wine tastings with a sommelier can be arranged, either for hotel guests, or before dinner for a sunset aperitif.
The ultimate in luxury, it's possible to sleep in the Presidential Suite, just above the Mauritius restaurant, featuring fine woodwork interwoven with Venetian chandeliers, paintings, antique mirrors, porcelain vases, white curtains and silverware. A particular favorite is the four-poster bed, which always adds that romantic touch you crave on a honeymoon.
Another option is to stay at one of the Heritage Resorts & Golf hotels in Domaine de Bel Ombre. Heritage Le Telfair, Heritage Awali and The Villas promise dream stays inspired by nature. If it's hard to get out of your room, a stroll through the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve is highly recommended, as is a dip in the incredible swimming pools. Two golf courses, two spas, a beach club, a Kids Club and 13 restaurants complete the all-inclusive offer.

2. Wapalapam, Le Morne Brabant
Just southwest of Mauritius, Wapalapam is a small Mauritian beach restaurant set in the foothills of Le Morne Brabant. Rok Flander, a former world snowboarding champion, and his wife Gabriella have turned an old colonial house into a friendly restaurant with their feet in the water. In the kitchen is chef Willibald Reinbacher, founder and author of the book "Aquacasia, culinary jewels of the Indian Ocean".
Everything is homemade and unpretentious, for aromatic dishes with accents of the Indian Ocean, Africa to the west, Asia to the north and Indonesia to the east. Choose from chicken wings glazed with pickled mango, tuna sashimi salad or octopus salad, various curries including a vegetarian option, cassava fries and grilled fish and meat. There is also a Wapalapam restaurant in the capital, Port-Louis.

3. Gin'ja, Bel Ombre
Gin'ja is one of the restaurants of the luxury Mauritius Heritage Le Telfair hotel, which brilliantly combines two dreamy promises: a sophisticated Asian culinary experience and a heavenly setting, feet in the sand, facing the lagoon. In this seaside pavilion lulled by the trade winds, pan-Asian cuisine offers exquisite sushi, flamboyant teppanyaki, ceviche, wok-fried noodles, lobster poached in an aromatic broth or subtly spiced Malaysian laksa: each dish is an invitation to a delicate immersion in the culinary traditions of Asia, sublimated by the savoir-faire of chefs Ved and Kanen.
The menu, both creative and demanding, seduces with its balance of flavors, the freshness of its ingredients - mostly local - and the precision of its seasonings. In the evening, the restaurant transforms into an open-air champagne bar, ideal for a romantic dinner or a celebration with friends.

4. Le Poivrier Le Jardin, Grand Baie
Gone are the days of indoor dining. At Le Poivrier Le Jardin (a group with several restaurants in Mauritius), in the village of Grand Baie, you're invited to dine outside in a tropical, plant-filled setting. A little Provencal paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the restaurant offers French and Italian cuisine, with risottos, pasta dishes, fresh fish and wood-fired grills.

5. Bois Chéri Restaurant, South of the island
On the verdant heights of southern Mauritius, on the edge of the peaceful Lac de Cratère des Cygnes, the Bois Chéri restaurant offers a unique stopover combining local gastronomy and a tribute to Mauritian tea. Surrounded by tea plantations as far as the eye can see, this restaurant is bathed in light thanks to its large bay windows, allowing you to enjoy lunch while admiring the surrounding countryside and the gentle undulations of the landscape.
On the menu, typical specialties rub shoulders with more unexpected dishes, subtly infused with tea: ourite and pineapple salad with black tea vinaigrette, chicken with green tea, or delicately scented venison curry. Lovers of wood-fired cooking will appreciate the homemade pizzas, while gourmets will be seduced by a tasting of teas and herbal teas from the nearby plantation. Last but not least, there's a small boutique where you can take home a few sweet treats or gourmet souvenirs.

6. Le Chamarel Restaurant
After visiting the Land of 7 Colors or the Rivière Noire Gorges National Park, head for this Mauritian restaurant perched 260 meters above Chamarel. Here, untamed nature stretches out before the astonished eyes of our guests. The terrace, with its wooden chairs and rattan lights, offers a panoramic view of the west coast. The highlight is the sunset, which transforms the colors of the sky minute by minute.

In the kitchen, you'll enjoy typical Mauritian cuisine: thin slices of smoked marlin with crunchy green papaya salad, chicken and shrimp curry or braised venison from their hunt with a pink berry sauce. Eco-responsible, Le Chamarel also has a boutique corner for taking away local delicacies on a Mauritius itinerary.

7. Le Fangourin, Pamplemousses
Nestled in the Beau Plan estate at L'Aventure du Sucre, close to the Pamplemousses garden, Le Fangourin is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal after or during this must-see tour of Mauritius. Under its varangue or in its large garden overlooking the mountains, the restaurant features a cuisine based on local garden produce and flavours.
As soon as they are placed on the table, the plates draw us in with their intoxicating aromas. We highly recommend the dry curry of venison and the rougaille of Creole-style smoked sausages with fried chilli, the two signature dishes of this restaurant.

8. La Potinière, Curepipe
La Potinière has been bringing the center of the island to life since 1968. Located in the heart of the Corson tea field in Curepipe, which can be admired through the bay windows or from the outdoor terrace, this Mauritian restaurant with its "factory chic" style is by turns traditional and modern.
On the menu: saffron cauliflower tempura, braised palm medallions, sea bream ceviche with coconut milk and coriander, octopus in Creole sauce and brown pig stew. A refreshing change from the beach.
