I. Our Favorite Places in Aix-en-Provence and the Surrounding Area

1. Hôtel Le Pigonnet (Aix-en-Provence)

In a peaceful neighborhood just a short walk from downtown, there was once a rose garden where Paul Cézanne loved to stroll. It belonged to the Pigonnet, a famous 18th-century Aix country house with a park lined with century-old chestnut trees, now part of the Esprit de France hotel collection. This tree-lined estate has always exuded a certain classic charm, with 47 rooms and suites featuring a modern take on Provençal style. Not to mention its elegant restaurant, which has been celebrated for its generous regional cuisine for half a century, as well as a second summer terrace, Les Amis. On sunny days, guests can stroll in the shade of the trees along the garden paths, admiring the view of Mount Sainte-Victoire, before (or after) taking a dip in the pool. 

Good to know: The hotel features a 4-bedroom Provençal villa with a private pool and garden, perfect for a stay with family or friends.

2. Château de Fonscolombe (Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade)

An impressive, fully renovated 18th-century mansion nestled in the heart of a park filled with century-old trees… A member of Relais & Châteaux, Fonscolombe is one of those places where you immediately feel at home. Designed as a family home centered around historic living rooms, it features a reading room, a games room, a gallery, master paintings, a piano, and a billiards room—all perfectly restored. The guest rooms are bathed in light and feature exquisite materials: intricately carved woodwork, rare fabrics, and marble and wood bathrooms… Not to mention its ideal location, just a stone’s throw from the region’s most beautiful attractions: Cézanne’s studio, the Caumont and Granet museums, the Vasarely Foundation, and the magnificent Silvacane Abbey.

Good to know: in the evenings, the Château hosts private concerts pairing music with the estate’s wine.

3. Château de la Gaude (Aix-en-Provence)

With a sweeping view of Sainte-Victoire Mountain, this imposing country estate—set in an enchanting setting amid vineyards and French-style gardens—remained a sleeping beauty for many years before being reborn in 2019. This fully renovated, 18th-century historic landmark (which served as the setting for the film *Le Château de ma mère*, based on the novel by Marcel Pagnol) now features 14 guest rooms and suites with clean, minimalist lines that play on the contrasts between contemporary style and the original architecture: molding, solid hardwood floors, immaculate walls, designer furniture, spacious marble bathrooms… as well as a new spa with an outdoor pool, a brasserie, a wine cellar, and a wine storehouse.

In fact, the château also produces its own wines, and the “Le Capéou” vineyard plot is even the highest point in Aix-en-Provence. For culinary delights, head to L’Art, a newly Michelin-starred restaurant in Aix-en-Provence, where Chef Matthieu Derible presides. There are also three other restaurants on the hotel grounds.

Good to know? La Source, the chic brasserie at Château de la Gaude, is the locals’ favorite spot when they want to get out of Aix-en-Provence. During our last visit, we also loved K, a Japanese restaurant serving superb sushi, rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and tataki made with ultra-fresh fish, as well as beautifully grilled Wagyu beef!

4. Villa Gallici (Aix-en-Provence)

Just a few minutes’ walk from downtown, in one of Aix’s most beloved neighborhoods, lies Villa Gallici. A member of Relais & Châteaux and the Italian Baglioni Hotels collection (Venice, Rome, Florence...), this intimate, tree-lined spa hotel in Aix-en-Provence almost has a Tuscan feel… Outside, there are French gardens, a pool, and a spacious terrace where you can savor Christophe Gavot’s Provençal cuisine in the shade of the plane trees. 5. Villa La Coste (Le Puy-Sainte-Réparade)

Between Aix-en-Provence and the Luberon Regional Nature Park (a 30-minute drive from Aix) stands a one-of-a-kind art center, nestled in the heart of a 200-hectare vineyard. Designed by Tadao Ando, the building itself is an impressive piece of architecture, where art lovers can admire a giant spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois, a Calder mobile, and other artistic treasures from the collection of the Francophile Irish collector Patrick McKillen. 7. Domaine Gao

A simple, 3-star hotel in Aix-en-Provence, featuring 18 rooms housed in an 18th-century Provençal stone country house, just 10 minutes from downtown but surrounded by wheat fields. You’ll instantly feel disconnected from it all thanks to the large park surrounding the hotel, featuring a pool, terraces, a boules court, an old pond, and flower beds that frame the restaurant’s terrace. Serving brasserie-style fare at lunch and inventive cuisine in the evening, Gaodina offers creative, sustainable dishes sourced from local producers—most of whom are organic. 8. Maison du Collectionneur (Aix-en-Provence)

With a name that alone evokes the intimacy of a private art gallery, the Maison du Collectionneur is tucked away in the heart of the Mazarin district, known for its many museums. Nestled below the ancient fortifications and not far from Cours Mirabeau, this boutique hotel has the feel of a grand family home. Good to know? The Terrasse du Cézanne, set in a garden that resembles a small village square, is the perfect spot to stop for a charcuterie platter or a slice of fougasse under the century-old plane tree.

10. Hôtel Escaletto

Just a stone’s throw from the thermal baths in Old Aix, the Escaletto has been a fixture on the Aix hotel scene since 1970.
