Hôtel Les Lumières, Versailles

The new 5-star hotel from Groupe 2L Collection (Château d'Audrieu, Le Cinq Codet, Hôtel Atmosphères...) called Les Lumières has opened its doors in the Royal City of Versailles. Located on Rue Colbert, in the immediate vicinity of the château that was the center of political power in France during the reign of the Sun King, this luxury establishment pays tribute to the visionary and grandiose architecture of the Age of Enlightenment. The Relais & Châteaux-branded Hôtel de Versailles is the result of the reunification of the former Villacerf and Gramont pavilions, both inherited from the 17th century and classified as historic monuments since 1930.

Architect Didier Benderli took on the challenge of renovating the buildings to integrate some thirty rooms and suites combining modernity with respect for the historic heritage, a gourmet restaurant under the leadership of chef Erwan Le Thomas, a Pierre Hermé tea room and an exceptional spa. Every detail of the decor, from the grand 1907 staircase to the period bookcases, recalls the elegance and grandeur of the Enlightenment and the Monarchy of Louis XIV. The 31 rooms, including 9 suites and junior suites, are named after emblematic 18th-century figures such as scientists, philosophers, writers and explorers, reflecting the spirit of innovation and curiosity that characterized the period.

The tea room on the second floor, with its six-meter-high ceilings, offers a panoramic view of the Place d'Armes, and is in keeping with the castle's salons d'apparat, with their gilding, mouldings and wood panelling. La Table des Lumières, orchestrated by Erwan Le Thomas, puts the accent on plant-based and locally sourced produce, enhanced by a fine wine cellar. The restaurant is working to obtain the Écotable label, the first sustainable catering label in France.

For a relaxing wellness break, a must for contemporary 5-star hotels, two treatment rooms, a hammam, a sauna, an herbal tea room and a fitness room await guests. A new benchmark in the royal landscape of Versailles.

Unsurprisingly, haute gastronomy reigns supreme, led by the legendary Alain Ducasse. From breakfast, with its delicious French-style viennoiseries, to the elegant tea time, to the sophisticated feast at the one-star restaurant Le Grand Contrôle, taste buds will swoon. And while we won't enumerate all the activities on offer at the 5-star hotel, apart from the incredible tour of the Château outside public opening hours, the Valmont spa more than deserves its moment in the limelight. Set against a backdrop of hand-painted murals and a black-and-white checkerboard floor, you can take a dip in the 15-meter pool before enjoying a royal treatment.

Dolce by Wyndham Versailles - Domaine du Montcel

Nestled in a 14-hectare wooded park, the Dolce by Wyndham Versailles has been enriched by the three centuries of history of the Domaine du Montcel. You'll be captivated by the two-hundred-year-old cedar enthroned in the park, before strolling through the English garden and taking in the Village des Arts. Delicate and woody, the rooms have beautiful floral headboards and tiled bathrooms. The decor of the Brasserie La Toile, meanwhile, brings back to life the Toiles de Jouy printed 300 years ago, all magnified by the view over the garden.
