Gastronomy at the top, the best restaurants in Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère, famous for its ski slopes, also boasts a rich culinary scene. From cosy chalets to Michelin-starred restaurants, the resort promises a veritable feast for gourmets. Take a gustatory journey to discover our favorite Val d’Isère restaurants.

Val d’Isère reveals its gourmet secrets far beyond its powdery slopes. Leave behind the comforting images of spinning raclettes and golden tartiflettes to push open the doors of restaurants where the finesse of Alpine cuisine reigns supreme. In this peaceful resort, every gourmet corner is a hymn to the variety of flavors, fusing singular stories, enchanting settings and a range of dishes that transcend the usual mountain repertoire.

1. Antoine Gras's Table de l'Ours, the Val d'Isère restaurant that confirms that talent doesn't wait for the passing of years

In the snowy heights that served as the backdrop for the cult classic "Les Bronzés font du ski", Val d'Isère has metamorphosed into a luxury setting where five-star hotels compete in elegance with traditional chalets. It was in one of these jewels, Les Barmes de l'Ours, that young culinary prodigy Antoine Gras made his home in 2013. Captain of three restaurants in Val d'Isère, it's at the gastronomic table that this native of the region deploys his art. Over the dancing flames of the fireplace, the chef from Auvergne marries passion and terroir, transforming Lake Geneva fera, alpine trout and local specialties such as Pormonier and Crozet into culinary masterpieces.

Each juice or sauce, the fruit of meticulous labor, enhances the flavor of the dishes. How about cheese? Choose from the treasures of Ferme de l'Adroit, perched at 1850 meters, to complete your experience. This symphony of tastes has propelled the young Gras into the Michelin constellation at just 24 years of age, while also earning him the promising title of Grand de Demain by Gault & Millau in 2024. As an added bonus, in addition to the restaurant we love, Les Barmes de l'Ours boasts a beautiful hotel spa, one of the largest in Val d'Isère.

In the heart of the K2 Chogori hotel, Val d'Isère's Le Bottleneck restaurant heats up its fireplaces for a refined, gourmet evening. In a lounge as sober as it is cosy, executive chef Bastien Paysant orchestrates a relaxed experience, rich in woody flavors. Planks to share around a fine wine, braised cuts of noble meat, family fondues with local cheeses... An ember cuisine in this Val d'Isère restaurant, which adds its stone to the edifice of fondue restaurants in this immaculate landscape.

3. The footprint of Ursus, when nature inspires the table

Clément Bouvier, chef by trade and globe-trotter of the oven, has built his love of cooking on generations of family tradition. His culinary adventure, marked by stopovers in New-York and Shanghai and stints with Michelin-starred chefs such as Meilleur and Piège, led him to make his dream come true: to open his own establishment. And so, in November 2017, Ursus saw the light of day, right where the slopes of Tignes - Val d'Isère meet.

In this den run by his parents, Clément Bouvier pays vibrant tribute to the surrounding nature and its treasures, inviting the flavors of his forest walks and undergrowth finds into every plate. His quest? To highlight the Savoyard terroir and its artisans, whose talents and exceptional products are the true heroes of his table. When it comes to décor, Ursus is an enchanted forest, with 400 trees and secret glades housing just 12 tables, bathed in soft, mysterious light. It's in this atmosphere that the chef, who will be awarded a Michelin star in 2019 and a green star in 2020 for his commitment to responsible gastronomy, offers a sincere, generous and unpretentious cuisine, with Mont Blanc playing the starring role in the background.
