The finest hotels in Alpe d’Huez: luxury in the mountains

The editors have selected five hotels in l’Alpe d’Huez, the Isère winter sports resort nicknamed “l’île au soleil”, for a ski-in/ski-out stay, or in summer for its verdant landscapes and hiking trails.

1. Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa, luxury hotel in Alpe d'Huez

How is the hotel? Nestled at an altitude of 1,830 meters in the resort's historic district and at the foot of the slopes, this fully-renovated hotel in L'Alpe d'Huez, open 9 months a year (closure in October, November and May) boasts exceptional views of the Oisans massif from its three south-facing terraces. Inside, designer pieces are highlighted by textured walls and materials such as leather, steel, fur and, of course, wood.

A cosy ambience is perfectly represented in the l'Esperance restaurant, where the chef offers refined, generous bistronomic cuisine, or in the Aux Grands Rouges bar, where you can enjoy Savoy wine accompanied by tapas and alpine cheeses. You can also dine at La Ferme d'Hubert for its Alpine dishes, or at Les Mas'Hauts for its delicious mountain dishes, including raclette and fondue. And for an intimate meal, private bubbles are available on the L'Espérance terrace.

What are the rooms like? Les Grandes Rousses offers a plethora of accommodation to suit all expectations, with 77 rooms, 18 suites, 1 loft and 2 mini-loft. Led by the region's traditional style and contemporary touches, most of these spaces boast soothing mountain views. If you're looking for a larger living space to accommodate all your family and friends, a chalet, connected to the establishment, spans 250 square meters and allows you to enjoy all the services of the Hotel de l'Alpe d'Huez, such as the ski shop, games room and fitness area.

What makes the difference? Its exceptional spa is based on the principles of Alpinothérapie®, a concept founded on the elements inherent to the mountains, such as altitude, cold (cryotherapy), special light, plants and minerals. Treatments are designed to rejuvenate the body and mind thanks to the richness of the surrounding natural environment. The sauna overlooking the mountains, the grotto hammam, the experience showers and the sensory pool provide a moment of total plenitude. We particularly appreciate the design of the bath bar and its sumptuous copper bathtub, a material reputed to boost the immune system. The spa prepares "homemade" bath recipes according to your needs, all deliciously accompanied by a drink and a sweet and savoury tasting board. These are truly rejuvenating moments in a designer atmosphere that relaxes the body after a day in the mountains.
