Hotels in Tuscany: selection of luxury and charm

Castello di Reschio | Castle life between Tuscany and Umbria

The history? Between gently sloping hills and lavender hedges, the Reschio estate spreads out its 1,500 hectares of cultivated land, vineyards, olive groves and forests, punctuated by ancient farmhouses, half of which have been stylishly renovated by Count Benedikt Bolza and Donna Nencia for over 20 years. This Austro-Hungarian family of Italian origin then set about transforming the main residence, a stone castle dating back to the 10th century, into a romantic 36-key retreat, a veritable design boutique-hotel on the border between Tuscany and Umbria.

What's the hotel like? Art and design are key elements in the castle's renovation, which was largely conceived by the Bolza family. Made-to-measure furniture and furniture of rare provenance sourced from antique dealers, marble, stucco and fabric work, works of art decorating the spaces and available for purchase at the Tabaccaia, landscaped gardens of local species - everything has been studied down to the smallest detail to remain true to the history of Reschio and the desire to create an exclusive hotel in Tuscany where you can feel at home.

The gastronomy? The Al Castello and Alle Scuderie restaurants, freshly reopened with new seasonal menus, feature fresh produce straight from Reschio's organic vegetable garden, sun-drenched olive groves, fragrant beehives and vineyards. Enjoy this bucolic Eden on a pleasant and captivating excursion through the wild forests once traversed by the Etruscans. If guests wish, they can join a local grower for a fascinating ethnobotanical walk, or take part in a cooking class. During the summer season, the Teatro Equestro is transformed into an open-air cinema. Guests can also spend the day by the lake in the Lake Cabin, offering a wide range of water activities, or enjoy a wellness getaway in the castle's vaulted cellars, transformed into a spa (saltwater Roman bath, hammam, sauna, treatment cabin).

What makes the difference? The 40 Spanish-bred horses from Count Antonio Bolza's stud farm, allowing guests to roam the estate, take riding lessons and watch dressage shows.

Pieve Aldina elegant harmony in Tuscany

What's the hotel like? The founding duo of Domaines de Fontenille, Frédéric Biousse and Guillaume Foucher, have done it again! Right in the heart of the Chianti valley, they have succumbed to the charms of a 16th-century episcopal complex, lost between gentle hills and picturesque villages. Four completely renovated stone buildings, set against a Romanesque church and the fortified village of Radda in Chianti, now welcome travelers in search of Dolce Vita. This unique hotel stands proudly amidst terraced gardens that stretch to infinity, with a bell tower at its epicenter that seems to embrace the sky. And what about the breathtaking view of olive groves and vineyards as far as the eye can see? A stay at Pieve Aldina means putting time in brackets, enveloped in the gentle Tuscan way of life, also embodied in the cuisine of chef Niccolo Pini at his restaurant Le Rondini, "the swallows". Here, as at L'Enoteca, traditional Tuscan cuisine, inspired by a rural way of life, is reinterpreted in updated classics such as panzanella, pici or pappa al pomodoro, served at all weddings.

The rooms? In the heart of the buildings, a collection of 22 rooms and suites are revealed, carefully preserving the original structures. Generous rooms, ranging from 35 to 120 m2, and high ceilings outline an incomparable luxury: that of unrestricted space. Despite the quest for simplicity, the richness of materials is never sacrificed. A refined selection of furniture highlights the seats by Italian designer Gervasoni and the renovated frescoes on the walls. We love the rooms that open onto the garden and pond, where it's not unusual to see a curious animal pointing its snout.

What makes the difference? From the lemon tree-lined pool to the Spa with its two massage rooms, from rejuvenating yoga classes to cooking lessons with a mamma, from captivating art history lessons to visits to nearby villages hiding heritage treasures, the various experiences on offer at Pieve Aldina won't allow boredom to find its place during your stay. Idleness, on the other hand..

On the gastronomic front, Il Palagio is a Michelin-starred restaurant orchestrated by chef Paolo Lavezzini, while in summer, the garden and bar play a more hushed role after dark.

What makes the difference? the Royal Suite Della Gherardesca, the oldest room, with its 1600s ceiling reflected in Ignacio Chiaise's ceramic floor, crystal chandeliers, marbled bathroom and rich antique furnishings transport us to another era.
