Paris: the best hotels in the 9th arrondissement

An overview of the best hotels in Paris’s 9th arrondissement. Boutique-hotels, design addresses, trendy spots and luxury hotels, from the Opéra district to Pigalle, in the heart of one of the capital’s most dynamic arrondissements.

If Paris could be summed up in just one arrondissement, it would surely be the 9th. Between the elegant Palais Garnier with its complex architecture and the chic Nouvelle Athènes with its intimate museums, the dynamism of the department stores and the Grands Boulevards with their retro covered passageways, or the trendy surroundings of Pigalle now known as “SoPi” (South Pigalle), this is undoubtedly a privileged place to set down your suitcases in the capital. Yonder’s selection of the best hotels in Paris’s 9th arrondissement.

1. Le Ballu | The stylish boutique hotel in the New Athens district

Behind its double facade of Flemish brick and classical freestone lies a 5-star hotel designed by architect Thomas Vidalenc and his hotelier wife Julia Vidalenc. With multiple inspirations (comic books and their imaginary countries like Tintin's Syldavia, Hergé's ligne claire aesthetic, Eastern Europe in the 1960s...), the 35 rooms and suites share a colorful vintage spirit, Slavic furniture and magnificent terrazzo in the bathrooms. Some, including one of the establishment's two apartments, even boast a planted terrace from which to glimpse the ground-floor patio, the outdoor space of the restaurant with its eclectic bistro menu (tournedos rossini, beaufort and truffle croque or roasted coconut-lemon shrimp).

What makes the difference? In the basement, a spa and swimming corridor with a 1960s Russian design, available for private use on request.

2. Le Pigalle | Pigalle's most designer address

This 4-star design hotel, less than 100 meters from Place Pigalle, is a reminder of the provocative, canaille spirit of the area, while paying homage to its young, creative spirit through numerous collaborations with local stores: coffees from Télescopes, selections from neighboring bookshop Les Arpenteurs, croissant from Pétrin Médiéval and beer from Brasserie de la Goutte d'Or, among others. The young Festen design studio has created interiors filled with antique objects, walls covered with posters and paintings, free-standing bathtubs and solid parquet flooring. Available in rooms or on the first floor, simple plates, assemblies of fresh seasonal produce from local merchants and suppliers, to munch on in a cosy armchair while listening to a good playlist.

Good to know? Free-standing bathtubs, balconies in some cases, bunk beds that may or may not be attached to the room next door, iPads and sound systems, you could spend all day in your room...

3. Hôtel Massé | The artists' loft

How about a bright, spacious loft in a Haussmann building in the heart of Pigalle? Once you step inside the Hôtel Massé, you enter a symbiotic universe. Artists from the Galerie Française and POUSH art galleries, such as Sophie Esteve, Eduardo Lalanne and Gallate Martin, have graced the walls of the establishment, while SoPi-based businesses supply breakfast pastries (Le Pain Retrouvé) and welcome chocolates (Plaq). In a move to promote French know-how, everything is sourced in France: hospitality products (Typology), soaps bearing the Massé logo (Foufour)... This loft-bohemian spirit continues in the 40 rooms (11 to 31 m2), decorated in neutral tones: white tiles with grey joints in the bathrooms, solid wood headboards in the bedrooms, immaculate walls..

4. Grand Pigalle Experimental | The pioneering address of new-generation Pigalle

In trendy southern Pigalle, now dubbed "SoPi", where cocktail bars, Fooding-approved eateries and cafés are opening one after the other, the Grand Pigalle is a forerunner. Opened in 2015 by the Experimental Group (which has since pursued its hotel expansion in Paris, Venice, Verbier, Menorca and London), the hotel's decor, imagined by Dorothée Meilichzon, celebrates the bohemian spirit of Pigalle in a setting that's both chic and casual. Original moldings, aged wallpapers, omnipresent geometric motifs and brass or mahogany give the hotel an undeniable cachet. On the first floor, a small, old-fashioned reception area, with its hanging keys, and a large living space with bar, restaurant and open kitchen.

What makes the difference? Chef Gregory Marchand's famous Frenchie Pigalle restaurant, an offshoot of his flagship Frenchie (1-Michelin star, rue du Nil, Paris 2e), unveiled in summer 2020, tested and adored by the editors. One of the best hotel restaurants in Paris.

5. Maison Souquet, Hotel & Spa | A luxurious boudoir by Jacques Garcia

Just a stone's throw from the Moulin Rouge and the red neon Pigalle, the 5-star Maison Souquet hotel is one of those places you walk past without noticing. And yet... you enter a lobby with three lounges in a row where mirrors, upholstered crapaud armchairs, a Murano chandelier and a wooden bookcase recreate the atmosphere of Madame Souquet's house of pleasure, opened here between 1905 and 1907. The inspiration, which served as a common thread for renowned decorator Jacques Garcia, continues in the names of the 20 rooms (14 bedrooms and 6 junior suites on 4 floors), which recall the nocturnal muses of their time. The basement features a 10 x 3-meter heated swimming pool, a hammam and the possibility of a massage, all of which can only be reserved for one hour by hotel guests.

6. Les Suites Cinabre | The most exclusive of the selection

This exclusive Parisian luxury hotel is located in Cité Bergère in the 9th arrondissement. This hotel is first and foremost a design studio adjoining a four-storey high-end men's ready-to-wear boutique. On the top floor, only two suites of 90 and 100m2: real jewels coordinated by Alexandre Chapellier, where we'd all dream of staying. On one side: platform bed, indoor garden, cocktail bar... on the other: varnished wood bathroom, listening room with turntable and vintage amp..

Each features a handmade Hästens king-size bed and fully-equipped kitchen, and staying in one of the Cinabre suites gives you access to the Club Sportif du Jeu de Paume, in Paris's 16th arrondissement. Isn't this one of the most beautiful establishments in Paris 9?

8. Hôtel Amour | Unsurprisingly romantic

If the Amour hotel group is known in the collective imagination as its two establishments based in Nice, enjoying its unrivalled sunshine, let's not forget that the first born was Parisian. Located in the capital's 9th arrondissement, not far from Place Pigalle, it boasts 28 rooms and suites with bespoke designs, some by French artists Jean Jullien and Alexandre de Betak.

This unusual hotel disguises itself as an establishment from the 1930s to the 1950s, not only thanks to antique furniture sourced from antique shops and flea markets, but also rejects contemporary hotel standards. At the Hôtel Amour, there's no television, air conditioning or telephone. But don't worry, disconnection doesn't mean a return to the Neolithic: rooms with terrace, bath, duplex, PRM access... but also elevator and room service available late into the night: everything is there for the greatest comfort!

The Amour restaurant opens onto an exotic garden, where you can sit with a book in hand and a plate of squash fritters or grilled sea bass fillet in front of you.

9. Hôtel Rochechouart | Pigalle's retro-chic grand hotel

On the border with the 18th-arrondissement, Hôtel Rochechouart, the third address in the Orso Hotels Paris collection, revives a turn-of-the-century institution at the foot of Montmartre. Here, in the basement of the former Mikado, Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier and Léo Ferré used to perform. The architect-decorator duo Festen (Le Pigalle, Les Roches Rouges in Saint-Raphaël...) undertook a renovation of the 8 floors, preserving the Art Deco spirit of the premises - glass elevator and moldings splintered by time, brick-red banquettes and large alabaster hanging lamps in the chic brasserie-style restaurant. The retro-style rooms are vast and bright, with muted colors of green, bronze, tobacco and wine, mottled furniture and minibars containing whisky decanters and signature cocktails for two.

What makes the difference? The Maggie rooftop bar on the 9th floor, open to all, with a 360° view of Paris and the Butte Montmartre within reach.

10. Sofitel Le Scribe Paris Opéra | An icon of the Opera district

A historic hotel, opened in 1863 a stone's throw from the Opéra Garnier, and home to the Lumière brothers' first worldwide cinema projection in 1895. Since the extensive renovation by interior designer Tristan Auer, the hotel offers 200 rooms, including 39 luxurious suites, as well as a 120m2 duplex apartment. All follow Parisian codes: fireplaces, moldings and paneling, while taking inspiration from the neighborhood with nods to the Grands Magasins ( tweed carpeting that Coco Chanel would not have disowned, dressing rooms open like portmanteaus...) and the Opéra, whose Chagall fresco continues on the multicolored ceilings of the bathrooms. The first floor features a large lobby divided into several areas: the central bar with its subdued ambience, the Rivages restaurant with its bistronomic cuisine by chef Martin Simolka, and the Scribe & Cie café, where you can enjoy tea, coffee and pastries during the day or cocktails and tapas in the evening. A wellness area is located on the 6th floor, where you can enjoy a body, facial or hand treatment with products from Absolution, and a hair and make-up salon.

Good to know? After designing the interiors of Le Sinner in the Marais district, Tristan Auer has now signed his biggest project in the hotel world. And it was only the first in a long list of projects in collaboration with the crème de la crème of luxury brands (Mandarin Oriental in Zurich in January 2024, Four Seasons in May of the same year, Shangri-La...).
