Our favourite hotels in Cancale, peace and quiet by the sea

A charming little port on the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, Cancale is also the territory of passionate hosts, happy to share the beauty and tranquility of their home, rich in unique maritime and terrestrial landscapes. Here’s a small selection of exceptional Cancale hotels in and around the port city.

1. La Ferme du Vent, Cancale's iconic hotel

Just a few kilometers north of Cancale, you'll find La Ferme du Vent, the refuge of the Maisons de Bricourt (a group of establishments owned by the Roellinger family). All around, nothing but Brittany's nature, the sea and the wind. An isolation conducive to calm and disconnection. Its three imposing granite buildings house six kleds - "sheltered from the wind" in Breton. Their décor of wood and rough stone creates a soothing atmosphere. Their large bay windows let in plenty of light and allow you to contemplate the horizon. In the longère, the Celtic baths (with sauna and hammam, to be booked in advance) are another call to relaxation. For a weekend by the sea, the hotel in Cancale invites you to slow down and live in osmosis with the five elements.

The room to book: the kled Obione, a haven of peace with a magnificent view.

2. Château Richeux, a historic Cancale hotel

Docile on its cliff, Château Richeux faces Mont-Saint-Michel. With its tumultuous history, it has nothing to envy the thousand-year-old abbey. This seaside villa was built in 1920 by architect Yves Hemard on the ruins of an 11th-century castle. Requisitioned by the Germans during the Occupation, it was subsequently occupied by a succession of different inhabitants before Jane and Olivier Roellinger fell in love with it and incorporated it into the Maisons de Bricourt in 1992. It became a Relais & Châteaux hotel in Cancale, with eleven rooms and two spacious suites overlooking the sea and the three-hectare garden. Despite major transformations, the architectural hallmarks of the turn of the last century remain, in particular the Art Deco mosaics by Isidore Odorico. In the dining room, make way for the Coquillage: a two-star restaurant where Hugo Roellinger excels. For a night or a few days, the walls of Château Richeux are the promise of a world at the rhythm of the tides.

Little corners of paradise: in the park, particularly near the Celtic vegetable garden, there are several benches where you can observe the view and enjoy a moment of meditation.

3. Auberge Sauvage

In the heart of the Manche village of Servon, Thomas Benady and Jessica Shein welcome guests to their home, an old 16th-century presbytery renovated in their own style. While adopting a contemporary style, they have retained the charm of this stone building. Three bedrooms have been fitted out. Passionflower, Lemon balm and Hogweed: they are all named after wild plants, a testament to the couple's passion for nature. Every day, the restaurant menu celebrates the richness of the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay region and the work of local producers. Never short of imagination, chef Thomas Benady likes to combine wild herbs from his daily foraging. Surrounded by a garden and orchards, the hotel in Cancale lives to the rhythm of the seasons and takes us along with it.

A good idea: Thomas and Jessica offer gift vouchers, perfect for giving a night (€130, breakfast included) to a loved one during the festive season!

4. Chambres Breizh Café

Breton by birth but Japanese at heart, Bertrand Larcher blends the flavors of these two regions of the world in his establishments throughout France and Japan. In Cancale, he has extended the gastronomic experience, setting up four rooms and a family suite above his Breizh Café crêperie and La Table Breizh Café gourmet restaurant. He names them after varieties of cider apple, but the rest is inspired by the restful spirit of ryokan, traditional Japanese inns.

The clean, minimalist décor features natural materials (blond wood and slate). Windows look out over the Port de la Houle, oyster beds and the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel as far as the eye can see. A stay between two worlds, between Brittany and Japan.

Star bonus: priority booking for Table Breizh Café (one Michelin star) and the eponymous crêperie!

5. Les Charmettes

Just 20 minutes from Cancale, Hotel Les Charmettes is a former girls' hostel transformed into a cosy, family-friendly address. The granite facades of its two 19th-century bourgeois villas blend in perfectly with the local landscape. However, the interior is quite different. The sixteen rooms - which sleep two to four people - are designed in an arty style blending shimmering colors with seaside decor. The same goes for the restaurant, where simple, gourmet dishes are served. Situated right on the beach in Saint-Malo, families on vacation and groups of friends passing through enjoy the terrace with their feet in the sand.

So you don't leave empty-handed: the souvenir store at the hotel, 20 minutes from Cancale, showcases local artisans.
