Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa, for a winter at the top
The history of the Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa is intertwined with that of the finest hotels in the Alps. Renovated from top to bottom, it is both the oldest and the newest hotel in Alpe d’Huez. A five-star mountain hotel suspended at 1,830m, designed in the spirit of an alpine chalet, where simplicity and elegance skillfully coexist.

The pitch
The fruit of a family saga that began in Huez at the very beginning of the 20th century, Grandes Rousses Hôtel & Spa embodies the authenticity that is the hallmark of Alpine hotels. Kindness and experience are the fruit of a long tradition. Located in the historic part of Alpe d'Huez, the hotel has been completely modernized, restyled and opened up, reinventing the art of living... and oxygenating. A cocoon of luxury and escape, it's like being in a large chalet designed for families and tribes, where everyone leads their own lives, in a cosy, elegant atmosphere.
How's the hotel?
As soon as you enter the hotel, the tone is set: chocolate tones, red and copper hues echoing the natural colors of dolomite, the stone that gives the Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa massif its name. The lounge, which extends over the entire first floor, is adorned with the work of craftsmen and a few industrial touches to give it a contemporary feel; generous seating, old leathers and sheepskins. The panorama permeates every space through large bay windows.
At the table, there's no risk of getting bored either. The restaurant and breakfast are up to the task: Savoyard specialties and cuisine d'auteur voyageur, between the gourmet L'Espérance and the more bistro-style Ferme d'Hubert, which honors Alpine nature. Les Mas'Hauts, small individual wooden chalets on the terrace of L'Espérance, reveal a few secrets: Savoyard and Vaudois fondues, raclette, walnut or blueberry tarts, and the chef's soups. Simple, convivial... and of course, short-distance, around pastures, lakes, rivers and vegetable gardens. Vegetarians, vegans and carnivores will all find something to please them. Another place of delight is "Aux Grands Rouges", a meeting place for lovers of coffee and croissants in the morning, tea time when it's time for a snack, and champagnes, cocktails and wines by the glass in the evening, accompanied by planks of charcuterie and cheeses sourced from nearby farms. All this is ski-in/ski-out access from the slopes, as all you have to do is cross the road to reach the green slope opposite the hotel, which takes 2 minutes to reach the "Alpes Express" lifts for access to the ski area.
And the bedrooms?
Most rooms (around a hundred in all) are interconnected and modular. The rooms are all different, enhanced by parquet flooring and color. The most spacious have a lounge and mezzanine, terrace or balcony. You can opt either for the rooms in the older part of the hotel (renovated and redecorated, equipped with all modern comforts) with their superb views over the valley, or for those in the modern buildings. Here, the spirit and decor are more contemporary, but as the windows face the mountains or the resort of Alpe d'Huez, the views are a little less beautiful.
Did you say Spa Alpinothérapie® ?
Grandes Rousses Hotel & Spa has always been a place of experiences. As far back as the beginning of the last century, the great-grandfather of the current owner offered his guests the chance to open up to the energies of nature. Today, the hotel focuses on Alpinothérapie®. Like thalassotherapy, the art of well-being through sea air and water, the concept uses the fundamental elements of the mountains: altitude, light, cold, plants and minerals from the Oisans. You breathe in the pure, conscious air, take a two-hour meditative walk in the mountains to reconnect with nature, touch rocky materials and taste wild flowers and herbs. On the way back, pancakes and hot chocolate are served before a massage with personalized mineral-based elixirs... The experience is holistic. It continues in the mountain spa, known here as the "spa of the Alps", in the indoor pool with chestnut-colored enamel, or in the outdoor pool with jacuzzi. In the grotto-hammam, the sauna (with a view), the sensory pool, cryotherapy and oligotherapy sessions, experience showers or a bath bar (with minerals and fresh plants) in a copper bathtub. A concierge service is available for special requests.
